HeaderRewriter for Microsoft Exchange 2010/2013/2016

As you know, each e-mail sent by Exchange server outside contains internal host names and IP addresses in some SMTP headers. Some people believe that it makes the organization vulnerable and want to hide or rewrite such "dangerous" information. HeaderRewriter software application is developed to help on this matter.

HeaderRewriter allows an Exchange administrator to substitute any substring in the following SMTP headers of outgoing messages:

On your Exchange 2010 Hub Transport Server or Edge server computer or on your Exchange 2013/2016 Mailbox Server computer do the following:

  1. Select (or create) a user account that is a member of the local Administrators, Domain Admins and Domain Users security groups.
  2. Log on locally as that user.
  3. Create C:\Program Files\HeaderRewriter\ directory.
  4. Download archive file to C:\Program Files\HeaderRewriter\ directory
  5. Right-click and hit "Unblock" button.

  7. If you are running Excahnge 2010 , navigate to C:\Program Files\HeaderRewriter\Exchange 2010 directory. If you are running Exchange 2013/2016, navigate to C:\Program Files\HeaderRewriter\Exchange2013_2016 directory.
    Run HeaderRewriterSetup.exe. Click Install button. Make sure that HeaderRewriter is appeared in the list of transport agents. Click Enable button.
  8. Click Add button in "Rewriting Rules" frame and create a rule. Make sure the rule you have just created is appeared in the list of rewriting rules.

  9. Click Exit button to close the program.


  1. Let's assume your internal domain is and you have set the following rule:
    "Message-ID" "" "NNN.MMM"
  2. Open Outlook and create a new mail message. Send your message to any external Internet address you can operate.
  3. Receive the message you have just sent using any SMTP/POP3 e-mail client (for example, Outlook Express) and make sure the sender address (From: field) is
  4. Open Outlook and create a new mail message. Click Options > Sensitivity > Personal. Click Close. Send this message.
  5. Receive a message you have just sent and make sure the Message-ID header contains "NNN.MMM" instead of "".


  1. Run HeaderRewriterSetup.exe. Click Uninstall button. Make sure that HeaderRewriter is not in the list of Transport agents.
  2. Click Exit button to close the program.

About this demo version.

HeaderRewriter demo version allows you to replace any substring only with fixed value “HeaderRewriter by IvaSoft (DEMO)”. The full version allows you to set any string value as a replacement.
